| | As the poet Rilke said, "Loving
another person is the hardest work there is, such that all other work is mere preparation."
Dr. John Becker is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Imago Relationship Therapist with over thirty
years post doctoral experience available to help you with that work.
Couples Therapy
Already in an important relationship that is stuck or in crisis?
There
are more effective and creative alternatives than trying the same approach with more and more effort or, if that approach fails, separating
from your romantic partner. Psychological research in recent years has revealed proven strategies that lead to deepening safety,
respect, joy, passion and love in romantic relationships. What is even more exciting is that these skills are very learnable.
While usually, consultations for couples are done on a weekly or biweekly basis, Dr. Becker also sees couples
for "Compact Couples Counseling" in a private, two six-hour day format.
It is preferable that your partner
actively participate in learning these skills with you from the beginning. However, you can learn how to respectfully
invite your partner into deeper levels of emotional intimacy by learning these skills initially by yourself. For detailed
information on this program, see the "Solo" Couples Therapy page at www.southfloridapsychotherapy.com.
Dr. Becker's approach to Couples Therapy is especially cost effective because, rather than
encouraging a continuing need for his advice, interpretations and arbitration, he helps you learn and master the skills necessary
to dissolve conflict and create continuing emotional safety, joy, and passion in your relationship.
Divorce Counseling
If you've already decided to divorce,
Dr. Becker offers a number of services that can help reduce unnecessary suffering for yourself, for your estranged spouse,
and certainly for any children you may have. This counseling can help you mourn, not only the loss of your marriage,
but also the loss of the marriage you had hoped for. The counseling can help you reclaim the power of parts of yourself
that may have been neglected during your marriage and help you develop an inspiring vision and plan for the future. If you
have a child or children from the marriage, the counseling can help you learn how to create an optimum emotional "co-parenting
climate" which is so critical for the future well being of your children.
Pre Commitment/ Pre Marital Counseling
Ready to commit
to your life partner?
Premarital counseling is arguably the wisest preparation for a life-long marriage that remains
"full of life." It's also one of the best ways to avoid the documented fact that some 50% of first and some
63% of second marriages end in divorce. Learn the skills that are crucial to success in your marriage before the honeymoon
ends.
Singles Counseling
Looking for your soulmate and life partner?
H. Jackson Brown in his book, "Life's Little
Instruction Book," says "Choose your life's mate carefully. From this one decision will come ninety percent
of all your happiness or misery."
Yet, virtually everyone, certainly those "walking down the aisle,"
believe they have the skills to attract the best mate for them and that they also have the skills necessary to nurture and
sustain that relationship, once found.
But, as previously stated, hard research reveals that some 50% of
first marriages and some 63% of second marriages end in divorce. A huge percentage of those who remain together lead paralel
lives often of "quiet (or not so quiet) desperation."
If
you've moved beyond thinking that writing a better internet profile or getting advice from well meaning friends and relatives
is your best preparation to attract your soulmate, you may be ready for a program based on cutting edge social science
research. Come learn the skills to avoid being part of those "romance horror statistics."
The process
led by Dr. Becker includes a structured curriculum with homework assignments which invite self reflection and a review of
past relationship patterns. It helps you discover the vision of the life you'd love to live and helps you articulate
the requirements that must be met in your life partnership for it to succeed long term. Most importantly, the process
includes developing the know-how and skills to both attract and then nurture your romantic soulmate relationship so that it
will continue to be respectful, joyous and passionate. More detailed information on this program can be found on both the
"Singles Psychotherapy" page and the "Solo" Couples Therapy page at www.southfloridapsychotherapy.com.
Communication Coaching for
Business
Could your business and professional relationships be more harmonious and, therefore creative?
Business and professional relationships inevitably go through
developmental processes as do other types of relationships. That is, they usually experience a "honeymoon period"
followed by a period of "storming" in which differences and conflicts become all too apparent. Without specialized
communication skills, these conflicts can become quagmires. Rather than being springboards to creative synergy, conflicts
can end in bitter impasse or even "divorce." Dr. Becker teaches a proven communicatioin approach which is easily
learned and, with proficiency, can create a harmonious, mutually supportive and successful business collaboration.

| What
others say...
Linda Strand, Couples Workshop Participant "Your workshop exceeded my expectations. Although it seems that all of the exercises
we have done dredged up some of the pain that goes with a lot of buried minefields, each session has pulled us up to a new
level of spiritual maturity in our marriage. You have managed to ask and expect a level of maturity in a relationship I would
not have considered achievable... I would characterize your gift to us as providing a way to new hope from a shipwreck of
lost innocence. I encourage you to hold up your vision of what a marriage can be for all of us." Gerald May, M.D. Psychiatrist, Director for Research and Program Development,
Shalem Institute
"I have recommended John to others as a teacher, group leader, spiritual guide and psychotherapist,
and have referred some of my close friends to him. I respect him immensely and recommend him most highly."
The
Rev. Carolyn T. Irish, Episcopal Bishop of Utah
"In groups I find that John offers the kind of hospitality
and attentiveness that lets people enjoy their participation, and that encourages them to offer and receive much more than
they ever expected."
Rosemary Dougherty, S.S.N.D. Director for Spiritual Guidance, Shalem Institute
"... as a group leader.... I have experienced John's giftedness in opening people to a new level of truth
and then moving aside for them to consider its relevance for them."
Kate Coopersmith, RN
"As
a nurse, caring for others comes easily. John's work has been most challenging and wonderous to me in holding me accountable
to allow others to care for me."
A personal note from Dr. Becker:
I grew up in a family and culture
that was very private and viewed the normal experiences of fear, confusion and need for support of almost any kind as shameful
and "weak." As a consequence, even though I was a psychologist myself, when my own marriage was in trouble in my
early thirties, the idea of being "found out", or exposed as less than interpersonally skillful by my spouse,
in couples therapy, was terrifying. Of course, because it was shameful for me to acknowledge fear, I distracted myself
by focusing on anything else....the expense, the time, my shame-based thinking that the problem had to do with my spouse's
personality, etc. All this to say that I know it can be difficult to walk into a therapist's office and that I respect
and admire anyone who does.
Fees
Dr. Becker''s fees range from $50 to $150 per session depending
on the type of service provided. His initial 45 minute consultation is $150. Fees are payable at the time of the visit. Dr.
Becker will provide an appropriate diagnosis if the client wishes to seek insurance reimbursement.
Is there a benefit
to not using your insurance? There sure is! PRIVACY! When you or any mental health provider submits an invoice to an
insurance company for any reimbursement of services, the provider must provide a diagnosis of you as suffering from a recognized
Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual (DSMIV) mental health disorder. These invoices and the provider's records of his/her impressions,
opinions, about you, etc., become the property of the insurance company. Although your records remain in the practioner's
office unless requested or audited by the insurance company, the invoices containing your information remain with the
insurance company. At this point, neither you, nor your provider can control how these companies handle your information.
Furthermore, being diagnosed with certain disorders may preclude you from receiving additional health or life insurance in
the future!
